Promotion of the socio-environmental services of the network of parks
The socio-environmental services of the parks are the benefits they bring to society, improving people’s health, economy and quality of life. We must work to strengthen the socio-environmental services of the network of parks in order to provide good coverage to the stretch of coastline. This involves working on a range of complementary services, so that they are distributed in a balanced and shared way among all the coastal parks. There are services that do not have to be offered in all areas, but there are others that must be available all along the coast.
The layout of the spaces, the provision of equipped spaces and the arrangement of furniture determine the uses that can be made of them and the socio-environmental services that the parks can offer. It is necessary to make decisions about these elements in order to achieve an equilibrium in the uses and socio-environmental services provided by the network of parks.
The actions planned are as follows:
- Green up and permeate the hardest parks so that they can provide more environmental services, and also promote the green corridor along the coast.
- Incorporate recreational elements and work from the user’s perspective on designing parks to make them pleasant spaces.
- Equip parks with furniture that encourages their use by the public.
- Consider parks as a climate refuge because of their thermoregulatory effect.
- Establish shaded areas and water features.
- When reconfiguring the Moll de la Fusta in the future, consider the need for this space to provide more socio-environmental services.
- Make public spaces and coastal parks more playable, especially in Ciutat Vella, as it is a district with a shortage of such spaces.
- Prioritise the social and leisure use made of parks by people and children.
What are we doing?

The main actions undertaken are related to the socio-environmental services of the city’s coastal projects, such as the Mar Bella seafront promenade and the study of the Shade Plan, which identifies areas in the city where shade is needed, some of which are along the coast. In terms of planning, the Nature Plan 2020-2030 covers a large part of the socio-environmental services provided by the network of parks with respect to biodiversity.

In the port area, and more specifically in Port Vell, seven resting areas have been installed in 2022, known as climate islands, where people can take shelter from the heat. These are spaces that have been created under existing trees and where more vegetation has been planted, together with a paving that reduces the ambient temperature, wooden benches and some sprinklers.

In 2022, the Olympic Port and Barcelona Zoo will carry out restoration work on the submerged structures and plan to install artificial reefs along the Dic de Recer seawall to increase marine biodiversity in the area.
