Peu de Montjuïc
The construction of the Barcelona ring roads was aimed at redistributing traffic in the city and improving connectivity for through traffic. For this reason, they were designed with a central trunk with fast lane characteristics and sides similar to urban roads. These sides, as well as channelling traffic in and out of the central trunk, were to integrate the infrastructure and give continuity to the contact with the city’s street network.
The stretch of the Litoral ring road between Zona Franca and La Carbonera was built by the Ministry of Public Works two decades before the rest of the ring roads. This section has very different characteristics, because the main criterion for its design was to provide good access to the Port of Barcelona by means of various links. Today, the surrounding conditions of this entire stretch of the Ronda Litoral ring road are changing rapidly.
It is necessary to draw up a consensual construction project that will satisfy the city’s and the port’s ambitions and provide a definitive solution to the lack of connectivity with the city centre via the foot of the Montjuïc mountain, with a design that will make it possible to resolve the cul de sac nature of Passeig de la Zona Franca. The remodelling of the Ronda Litoral ring road is an excellent opportunity to remedy the lack of connectivity and accessibility of La Marina, to create a new urban corridor around Montjuïc for pedestrians, public transport and bicycles that will recover the historical continuity of this pathway.
The transformation project is even more ambitious: the environmental regeneration of the foot of the mountain and the recovery of the land that will be freed up by the relocation of the Morrot railway terminal as footpaths and as city port areas.
What are we doing?
In the short term, a road is planned that runs through port and city areas and offers the possibility of creating an exclusive access point for coaches, taxis, pedestrians and bicycles, connecting Zona Franca and the La Marina neighbourhood with the city centre without having to take the Ronda Litoral ring road. This road also offers urban buses an alternative route in the event of the ring road coming to a standstill.
The technical services of the port and the City Council are jointly analysing alternatives and the feasibility of the proposal.
