A coastline ready to face climate change
The seas and oceans play a key role in mitigating climate change, as they act as one of the planet’s great reservoirs of CO2, sequestering it at the bottom of our oceans through physical, chemical and biological processes. However, the increase in emissions and the excess of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere could jeopardise the proper functioning of this system and unbalance the climate system, reduce the mitigation potential of the seas and oceans and, once a certain critical point has been overcome, even cause them to become an element of climate change.
The city of Barcelona is aware of the role of the oceans and seas in this global climate change process and the vulnerability of the coastline to its effects. That is why both the Barcelona Climate Plan and the Climate Emergency Declaration include lines of action aimed at conserving the sea and the maritime and coastal environment.
The aim is to have all the information available in order to see what the main effects will be on the Barcelona coastline in the not so distant future.
What are we doing?
-
- A study on the impact of climate change on the Barcelona coastline has been carried out by Barcelona Regional (completed in December 2021). This study is based on a compilation of previous studies and includes data from the latest assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In other words, no specific modelling or specific work is included in this study. The aim is to collate all the information available in order to see what the main effects will be on the Barcelona coastline in the not so distant future.
