LA CARTOGRAFIA MEDIEVAL I BARCELONA

Una nova adquisició de la ciutat: el fragment de carta portolana de Guillem Soler, c. 1375

Les cartes portolanes o cartes nàutiques medievals són els primers mapes realistes  fets a escala que es coneixen. Aparegueren al segle XIII, i van acabar revolucionant la manera de percebre i de gestionar l’espai de les societats medievals. Des de la cruïlla de rutes que era aleshores el port de Mallorca, i amb l’aportació intermitent de la ciutat de Barcelona, la cultura catalana en va produir i exportar alguns milers. Potser mai més en la història la llengua i la cultura catalanes han tornat a tenir al món una presència més àmplia i decisiva.

Un tresor patrimonial d’aparença modesta

Aquest fragment és un dels deu testimonis de la cartografia catalana del segle XIV que sobreviuen al món, l’únic conservat a la península Ibèrica. Procedeix d’un dels exemplars senzills que els mariners usaven per navegar, tret que encara el fa més excepcional.  A diferència de les obres de luxe, les cartes barates, sotmeses a la meteorologia i mancades d’espais de conservació, només han pogut sobreviure com a materials de relligadura (Flores Theologicarum Questionum de Josep Anglès, any 1575). Amb la seva adquisició, la ciutat de Barcelona cobreix un gran buit patrimonial de la cultura catalana.
