Letònia. La lluita per la llibertat

Amb el pacte acordat entre Adolf Hitler i Ióssif Stalin el 23 d’agost del 1939, Letònia Estònia i Lituània van ser ocupades per l’exèrcit de la Unió de Repúbliques Socialistes Soviètiques (URSS) el juny del 1940. Un any després l’Alemanya nacionalsocialista trencava el pacte i envaïa els països bàltics ocupats per l’URSS. A punt d’acabar la Segona Guerra Mundial i gairebé derrotat el nazisme, l’any 1944 l’URSS va ocupar de nou Letònia, Estònia i Lituània. Aquest cop, durant 45 anys.

Enguany fa 25 anys que, a la tardor del 1989, una onada de llibertat va recórrer el centre i l’est d’Europa. Polònia, l’Alemanya Oriental, Letònia, Estònia, Lituània, Hongria, l’antiga Txecoslovàquia, Romania i Bulgària eren països que o bé pertanyien al pacte de Varsòvia (1955-1991) o bé eren directament integrants de l’URSS.

Aquest era el cas dels països bàltics de Letònia, Estònia i Lituània que, l’any 1991, van restablir la plena sobirania i, el 2004, van ingressar a la Unió Europea com a estats democràtics i independents. L’exposició presenta un recorregut per la història contemporània de Letònia i la seva lluita per la llibertat després de mig segle d’ocupació.
