He is Emeritus Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), which he founded and directed.
He has been a visiting professor at the University of Technology Sydney and Western Sydney University. The awards he has received include the City of Barcelona Research Award (1982), the American Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence’s Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award (2011), the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI)’s Distinguished Service Award (2016) and the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award (2018), among others. He is an honorary member of the EurAI, a full member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and of several advisory committees.
