Teatre Nacional de Catalunya - Sala Tallers (gardens). Corner of Ribes-Castillejos

Urban spaces are anything but neutral, simple places. They are territories laden with political meaning that condition the way residents inhabit them. Within this context, playgrounds, which sprang from progressive calls in the 19th century, are the ultimate bastions devoted purely to fun, play and recognition of children as fully citizens.

The Institut del Teatre presents a dramaturgy of light, where different empty swings sway back and forth alone, projecting light beams. The public, restrained by fences and signs, can only observe this spectral scene from a route around the perimeter, making them the passive witnesses of a ghost park.

The installation thus becomes a warning cry about the increasing suffocation of public spaces, which are increasingly monitored, rule-bound and mercantilised. This project defends the right to the city beyond institutional control and the logics of a consumer society.
