NOTICE: STROBE LIGHTS

Llum BCN unveils a new version of “Parallel Strata,” a kinetic sculpture of light and sound by Nicky Assmann and Joris Strijbos, commissioned in 2018 by the ZERO Foundation. Five kinetic machines rise above the audience, generating a dynamic shadowplay and stroboscopic sound field. The artwork is inspired by the avant-garde light projects of the German group ZERO. An artistic movement that sought to create a pure aesthetic experience. Focusing on the interaction between the audience and the composition, the project explores the synaesthetic relationship between kinetic rotating strobe lights and sound. Subtle interaction elements unveil new layers, referencing the inherent strata within the spatial and circular composition of the sculptures. An abstract intervention that evolves over time and space, exerting a direct and multisensory influence on the audience’s perception. Mechanical entities of light and sound merge into a captivating machinist landscape, inviting visitors to engage and stroll around.

Nicky Assmann and Joris Strijbos, Dutch artists based in Rotterdam, find inspiration in nature, science, technology, and perception. Rooted in empirical research, their collaborative works experiment with perception and manifestations of kinetic art. They create multisensory experiences using kinetic light, sound sculptures, videos, and audiovisual performances, emphasizing the synaesthetic relationships between sound, light, space, time, and movement. Their creations, regarded as tools for audiovisual compositions, evolve into a kind of expanded cinema, exploring various components of the cinematic device. Building their light projectors, crafting screens from various materials and creating compositions for luminous and kinetic sequences, these abstract interventions evolve through time and space, directly influencing the senses. Assmann and Strijbos have showcased their creations worldwide at festivals, museums, and galleries. Both are members of the Macular collective.
