The moving poster of La Mercè 2024
The Barcelona-based production company Canada is filming a spot to advertise the Festa Major de Barcelona from which the image of this year's poster has been taken.
The times are changing and if, until now, the Mercè poster has been the exclusive territory of artists and designers, now it comes from Barcelona’s audiovisual talent. A video production company that has created the video clips of some of the songs you like the most is from Barcelona and, nowadays, has been invited to create, not a poster but a teaser of the festival… from which the image of the poster has been taken.
The image of La Mercè 2024 is the work of the audiovisual production company Canada. The artistic concept alludes to a major festival, which belongs to the citizens, but which is open to everyone. And to the great influence that a popular festival like this has on the city and its inhabitants. Even for those who don’t go to the festival or don’t even know what La Mercè is, the city offers a meeting place with music, joy and shows.
In the poster, Canada offers a look at La Mercè from the point of view of someone who is seeing it for the first time. It shows us, therefore, the excited gaze of an infant who is fascinated by the artificial lights. For this infant, the sounds, the sunshine, the lights and the giants are the festive expression of the city where he lives. Wherever everyone’s senses are stimulated, this child finds peace. Barcelona’s festival enters through the door of his house and finds the one who needed it the most.
The image on the poster is related, as we said, to the short film that tells the story of a baby who never stops crying. The infant’s crying will only stop, after a whole day, when he sees a cat whistling through the window. He will fall asleep amidst the explosions of the artificial lights.
Yes, as you can see, the poster of La Mercè this year has an audiovisual origin, as it has been commissioned by a studio made up of great experts in the world of video. It is a production company from Poblenou that you probably know because it has made the video clips of some of your favourite artists: from Dua Lipa to Coldplay, passing through Rosalía.
The production company was founded in 2008 in the same place where you can find it today, Poblenou, although it now also has offices in London and Los Angeles because, from the Catalan capital, they have made a name for themselves all over the world. Thanks to their total involvement in the world of art, Beck, Travis Scott, Phoenix, Katy Perry and Tame Impala, among many others, have commissioned video clips from them. Canada was founded in 2008 by directors and founding partners Nicolás Méndez and Lope Serrano, with whom the production company Alba Barneda works.
Canada’s audiovisual creations have won awards and nominations in festivals such as Cannes Lions, Grammys, Latin Grammys, Ciclope Berlín, MTV EMA, UKMVA and D&AD.
