Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez: the best public library in the world
The jury for the Public Library of the Year valued the way the library interacts with its surroundings and local culture, the architectural quality of the building, the flexibility of its spaces and services, sustainability, commitment to learning and social connection, digitalisation and the technical solutions of services, plus the library’s compliance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.The Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez is located in the neighbourhood of La Verneda i la Pau, in the district of Sant Martí. It has six floors, a visible wooden structure and nearly 4,000 square metres of floor space. Opened last year, the library specialises in Latin American literature and is the latest in a prestigious list of libraries to gain this award. Other recent winners include: Missoula Public Library (USA), Deichman Bjørvika (Norway) and the Oodi Helsinki Central Library (Finland).
