New study year under way at the city’s music schools
Over 3,500 students have started the 2023-2024 year at the city’s five municipal music schools, which this year mark their 30th anniversary, and at the Barcelona Municipal Music Conservatory. The goal of municipal music schools it to facilitate access to music and musical practice for students of all ages, respecting their right to access and addressing the social and educational value of music and its influence on school life. The city’s five municipal music schools (EMM Can Fargues, EMM Can Ponsic, EMM Eixample – Joan Manuel Serrat, EMM Nou Barris and EMM Sant Andreu – Mestre Pich Santasusana) have over 2,400 students enrolled on ongoing study programmes and offer workshops of different lengths for children and adults, with 652 places in all. The Barcelona Municipal Music Conservatory also offers a programme of activities open to the city and has 518 students enrolled for the different disciplines of professional degrees.
To ensure that people’s financial circumstances are not an obstacle, the Barcelona Institute of Education (IMEB) offers discounts in the public pricing for students between the ages of 4 and 18. For the 2022-2023 year, 268 discounts were awarded to families with students enrolled on ongoing study programmes.
Municipal music schools also promote support and guidance at schools and musical awareness projects in the community, linked to cultural facilities such as community centres, neighbourhood centres and other organisations and associations. They also form part of cultural agendas and take part in artistic programmes and festive events.
During this term of office, the network of municipal music schools is set to gain two more centres, while the EMM Sant Andreu is to be transferred to the Fabra i Coats so that activity can begin there for the 2024-2025 study year.
