Over 4,500 on-board cameras have been installed on 1,027 vehicles to improve user safety and optimise the running of the service. The video surveillance system can record and relay on-board images in real time.

The main goals are as a deterrent and as a means of proof in denouncing possible offences (aggressions, harassment, theft, accidents etc.) and in the fight against LGBTI-phobia and sexual harassment. The cameras will also assist with the analysis of occupancy levels, helping to improve the service.

Each vehicle has between 2 and 7 cameras which can record all the spaces on board vehicles and enable the Bus Safety Control Centre to view images in real time and download recordings on the spot. In all cases, and in accordance with the legal regulations in this area, the images recorded are kept up to a maximum of 30 days.

In parallel, the metro network also has 3,270 cameras on board trains and 5,576 around its premises: a total of 8,846 cameras all around the network, between trains and stations. The system should be installed on all trains in 2025.

TMB as a global leader in diversity, inclusion and gender equality

The initiative comes within the framework of the social responsibility policies by TMB, an international leader in protocols for prevention, detection and intervention against LGBTI-phobia and sexual or gender harassment. TMB’s work was recognised last year with an international award from the International Association of Public Transport, making the company a global role-model in diversity, inclusion and gender equality on public transport.

In addition, the protocols implemented enjoy the collaboration of organisations in the sphere of women and LGBTI, such as the Observatory Against Homophobia, and the support of institutions such as Barcelona Provincial Council.
