Peter Brook returns to the opera with a new production that, like some of his earlier works, focuses on the theatrical nature of representation, reducing the distance with the spectator to the minimum. At the Grec 2011, the director, born in London but fully integrated into the French theatre scene since the 1970s, takes one of Mozart’s most renowned operas to present a free version for piano featuring a cast of young voices, credible characters who sing their arias in an intimate setting that brings out all the feeling. Large orchestras, vocal virtuosity and stage effects give way to the theatricality of the story in a set that places pianist and singers in direct contact with the audience.
