Tribal tattoo and haka: Barcelona paints herself in Maori

  • Activitats paral·leles

This year the Grec festival travels to Oceania, and the square Margarida Xirgu joins the party changing color and performing an ancestral dance. The festival's programming in the Montjuïc square brings two of the most well-known Maori rituals: the tribal tattoo and the haka. We will be led through some passionate traditions by Pau Beyondskin (Paula Muñoz, doctor in Fine Arts, specialist in traditional Maori tattoo and researcher of the history of tattooing in the world) and by Gensen Palmer, professional interpreter of haka Maori.

They will be responsible for presenting a very entertaining journey through the New Zealand culture for all the public. Join them and they will show you how to paint your face like a Maori, either if you are older or younger, and also how a haka is interpreted, typically danced with a painted face, exclamations and powerful movements to challenge the rivals. This same dance is also interpreted as a sign of hospitality and in special celebrations, symbolizing the power and unity of the group. Stay until the end and you will enjoy, live, a hundred percent professional representation of this amazing ritual!

During the most part of July, at the heart of the festival in Montjuic, a range of free activities have been programmed to enjoy some good times prior to entering the stage shows.
