Since 2006, Alain Platel has been researching into what he calls “bastard dance”, which occurs, he says, when dancers explore the regions of their consciousness that are as yet untouched by civilisation. This time, Platel takes his inspiration from two sources: firstly, the project Tauber Bach by the Polish artist Artur Zmijewski, who asked a group of deaf people to sing music by Bach as they perceived it; and, secondly, the documentary Estamira, by Marcos Prado, about a schizophrenic woman who lives and works at a landfill in Rio de Janeiro. The character played by Elsie de Brauw, an extraordinary actress and one of the most outstanding figures in Dutch theatre, is inspired by this unusual woman, Estamira, who, despite her mental illness, has a charismatic personality, discusses the most interesting philosophical ideas and has created her own language in order to communicate with those around her. The actress is accompanied, on a stage strewn with old clothes, by five dancers who are like primitive creatures, their actions almost the result of instinct. These, then, are the inhabitants of an apocalyptic world in which spasmodic movements performed in unison and a melody by Bach or Mozart, sung by the artists on stage, comprise the last remaining vestiges of a long-lost civilisation.
