Josep Maria Pou heads a cast full of leading names from the theatre world in a new play about the trial of an Athenian philosopher sentenced to death for denouncing corruption and superstition.
Besides one of the most renowned philosophers of ancient Athens and the teacher of Plato, Socrates is considered one of the founders of Western thought. A wise man who refused to write down his thoughts, believing that each should develop their own, his is the ironic expression by which humanity today admits its ignorance: "I only know that I know nothing”. In this play, written and directed by Mario Gas, the actor Josep Maria Pou plays the role of the philosopher. Socrates is judged and condemned by his fellow citizens after denouncing corruption in Athens and warning against the superstitious and manipulative role of official religion. Accused of denying the gods and corrupting the young, he refuses to flee, as his followers urge him to do, after he is sentenced to swallow a glass of poison hemlock. Finally, Socrates’ death becomes one of the most famous in history the finished turned into one of the most famous dead history.
