Cosa de dois

A pianist who’s left his mark on contemporary jazz and has collaborated with an eclectic group of key players in music climbs on stage with a Portuguese singer who finds this genre among his great passions.

They both have a long history of collaborating with various artists, and they’ve even been on the same posters for big festivals such as the 2020 edition of Jazzaldia, the San Sebastian Jazz Festival, but we’ve never seen them perform together, which they will do for the first time on stage at the Teatre Grec. We’re talking, of course, about Marco Mezquida and Salvador Sobral. The first is one of the best discoveries on the jazz scene in recent times. This Menorca-born pianist has been chosen four times as musician of the year by the Association of Jazz and Modern Music Musicians of Catalonia and has performed at the Palau de la Música Catalana, among other prestigious stages worldwide. He’s played with jazz stars like Carme Canela, Perico Sambeat, Gorka Benítez and Javier Colina, and has collaborated with many different kinds of artists, such as dancer and choreographer Sol Picó and the flamenco dancer Juan de Juan. But Mezquida has a special place in his heart for the world of song, putting his piano at the service of great voices. Now we will find him collaborating with a star of the genre with a special weakness for jazz: Salvador Sobral, hailing from Portugal. The singer became well-known in 2017 when he won the Eurovision festival, but his career goes far beyond that and is linked with a vision of jazz that connects this genre with bossa nova and the sounds of Latin America. He was even part of a Venezuelan group based in Barcelona for a time. Now, the Portuguese musician returns to the Catalan capital and stars in a treat of a collaboration that brings together two big names in singing and piano. It will surely be a night to remember.
