A fascinating fusion of jazz and tango, performed by one of the leading ensembles on the Argentinian popular music scene today. The grandson of Astor Piazzolla revisits the master's greatest compositions accompanied by his band and the sensual voice of special guest Buika.
Tango, jazz, folk and other sounds all form part of the musical fusion served up by Escalandrum, a sextet formed in 1999 by Daniel Pipi Piazzolla, the group’s drummer. It was only a matter of time before Escalandrum decided to perform a repertoire of pieces by tango legend stor Piazzolla, and this finally occurred in 2011. To this end, they selected some of the Argentinian composer’s most classic pieces, but also several less well known but beautiful songs. The result was an album, Piazzolla Plays Piazzolla, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. Tonight, these sounds will be played live, enriched by the voice of Buika, a versatile, charismatic artist who will provide the vocals for Piazzolla’s songs. She will be accompanied by a band that has become one of the best-known jazz ensembles in Argentina. Escalandrum’s fusion of urban and folk sounds has made them popular, not only in their native country, but around the world.
