Fun, danceable, evocative... That is the music, fusing Afro-American and Iberian sounds, that Juan Perro has been exploring for the last twenty years.
Zarabanda is the name given to a rhythm that was popular until the 17th century and is considered the first song and dance music of African origin created in Andalusia, and which became internationally famous. Hence the title of Juan Perro’s latest show, which explores the connections between music on the Peninsula and African sounds. For, since 1992, Juan Perro has been illustrating the relations between Iberian musical traditions and African rhythms, or, to put it another way, showing that Spanish sounds have a frontier quality, the result of rich fusion. All this is celebrated in a concert featuring not only Juan Perro’s own songs, but also reworked versions of Andalusian sounds, cajón drum rumba, mambo and a thousand other rhythms that link Afro-Hispanic music to sounds deriving from the blues, as well as rumba and tango.
