The members of a circus company receive hospitality from a group of Ecuadorian farmers in the heart of nature, where they learn to use guadua -a kind of American bamboo- in their act. A story of friendship and wisdom that also talks about the circus and about nature.
Pals, a production in which the director, artist and builder Leandro Mendoza used all kinds of natural elements to create a circus show inviting us to connect to the earth, was a great hit at Grec 2015. Now, Mendoza returns with Guadual, a show about a circus company who are tricked and end up beside a river. There, they meet three Montubio farmers from the region, who take them in to the guadual in which they live and, in exchange, begin to learn the circus arts from their guests. The farmers teach the artistes to use guadua to build a thousand and one objects, including lots of equipment that they will then use to create and rehearse new circus numbers. In this way, then, the Montubios and the performers learn from each other, becoming transformed in the most harmonious and sustainable way and, in the process, building – before the spectators’ very eyes – a circus show that speaks, not only of skill and technique, but also of the natural world, exchanges of knowledge and dialogue. Come and see how circus artistes learn to move around the forest as if they had been born there, creating a charming, utopian show: the Guadual Circus.
