A desert that comes to life, a planet where it’s actually raining men, a jungle that’s a god, a place where mothers raise children to be used as food... Despite being rooted in genres as wildly different as science fiction and Caribbean horror, the fabulous universes created by Laura Ponce of Argentina and Elaine Vilar Madruga of Cuba share a symbolic representation of human fears and desires but also a bent for the atavistic and the shock factor, as well as a unique style and special understanding of institutional violence, ecofeminism and the legacy of colonialism. Guided by expert Teresa López Pellisa, who will use their books Cosmografía profunda [Deep Cosmography] and El cielo de la selva [The Heavens of the Jungle] to analyse the similarities and differences between these two leading voices on the contemporary Latin American scene, the Jungles, Colonies and Ecofeminism roundtable discussion will show how the power of imagination makes it possible to build bridges between outer space and the Caribbean that serve as mirrors.
