THE NEW STEAMPUNK BOOM: UTOPIAN, DYSTOPIAN OR UCHRONIC?
Manu González, the author of Steampunk, the first book written in Spain on this science fiction sub-genre, will lead a round table to reflect on the increasing revival of steampunk after years when there had only been occasional publications on this retro-futuristic sub-genre. Why is it successful? Why has it been a more visual than literary genre until now? Is steampunk utopian, dystopian or simply uchronic? In times of uncertainty like today, are authors looking back to the past to search for a better future? To discuss these questions, González will be accompanied onstage by Celia Corral-Vázquez, author of Puedes llamarme espátula, a humorous fantasy-science book which won the first novella award given by the magazine Droids and Druids; Júlia Díez, coordinator of the short story collection Y si lo contamos... steampunk, published by Apache Libros; José Antonio Bonilla, coordinator of Barcelona Steampunk 1880-1910 (Apache Libros, 2022), a compilation inspired by iconic monuments of Barcelona; Francisco Bracero, author of Esclavos de la sangre (Editorial Susana Martínez Franco, 2023), the steampunk adventure with vampires, witches, golems and beings from the underworld; and Jordi Font-Agustí, author and coordinator of the short-story collection Vapor negre. Barcelona steampunk 1911 (Crims.cat, 2023).
