As you enter the park, you will see palm trees and some very tall pines that give way to a windy path, with sections of stone stairs that lead to the heart of the gardens. This path surrounds the park, with rest areas containing benches (some made from stone, legacies of the former owners) and large parterres, rich above all in palm trees.
A wide open space boasts one of Barcelona’s accessible and integrating children’s play areas. The park is designed to be used as a children’s play area but also a leisure and meeting point for older people.
History
The Moragas Gardens have belonged to Barcelona City Council since 14 February 1957. They were previously owned by the siblings, Joaquín and María de la Concepción de Moragas Ixart.
Biodiversity
The lush vegetation insulates visitors from the heavy urban environment that surrounds the park. A good many of the tree specimens are large and considerably old, having been planted by the former owners of the gardens at the start of the 20th century.
There are Aleppo pine trees (Pinus halepensis), Himalayan cedars (Cedrus deodara), horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum), cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens), jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and peppercorn trees (Schinus molle). Notable palm trees include the fan palms (Washingtonia filifera), spectacular groups of dwarf palms (Chamaerops humilis) and Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis).
The islands of vegetation are so tall and dense, that you can only see what is immediately in front of you. All that makes the gardens look much bigger than they really are. The perimeter path sometimes widens to create a small square, inviting visitors to sit there for a while.
Art and Architecture
Art in these gardens is represented by a sculpture entitled 23 d’abril, Antoni Ramón González’s homage to books and reading.
