Writing – in the form of both criticism and theory – has been an integral part of Jeff Wall’s work, complementing a corpus of photography that began to form in 1978. His first text comes from 1981, and he still writes today. On the peripheral scene of Vancouver (British Columbia), Wall sought to combine a rather literary approach to what is known as concept art with the practice of screenplay writing. Both in his photography and in his texts, this way of doing things coexists alongside constant, open reflection on the history of the ‘pictorial’ tradition and of critical thinking.

This book brings together sixteen texts, essays and interviews with internationally renowned personalities from the art world. Edited by Jean-François Chevrier, the leading expert in Wall’s work, it includes seven texts that have never before been translated into Spanish, as well as other, out-of-print pieces of writing.

Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall was born in 1946 in Vancouver, where he lives and works. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world. His photographs depict reconstructed situations, in a process Wall calls ‘cinematography’. Since the 1970s, Jeff Wall has been considered one of the most pioneering artists when it comes to exploring the connections between photography, painting and cinema. He is a key artist mentioned in all contemporary debates on photography, as well as an art professor at various universities in Canada, and his critical essays have been translated into many languages. His work has been present at numerous retrospective exhibitions, the most recent being at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac (Maryland, 2021), the Fondation Beyeler (Basel, 2024) and Virreina Centre de la Imatge (Barcelona, 2024).
