During the first quarter of the 20th century, the recognition, popularity and success of Ignasi Iglésias’ theatrical works was a demonstration of the public's affection, who saw the playwright from the Barcelona neighbourhood of Sant Andreu as an upright, positive, coherent and generous man. The historical context required clear, courageous voices. And the “poet of the poor”, a fitting description by Joan Maragall, knew how to capture the air of renovation of that time, the challenges imposed by industrialisation and the desire to affirm the identity and hope of Catalan culture. The theatrical works of Iglésias are an expression of a commitment to truth and solidarity, while also demonstrating his fidelity to the ideals of liberty.
