The women in this book share a vital strength, that of not bending before the social prejudices of their time, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, that limited them to a passive role, to be invisible and to depend on one man or another their whole lives. Here are the stories of seven women – Catalan either by birth or who made Catalonia their home – who took the decision to be in control of their own lives against the norm, who were prominent in their professions and who worked to help those who were less fortunate: Anaïs Napoleon, Amalia Domingo, Emília Carles, Clotilde Cerdà (known as Esmeralda Cervantes), Emília Coranty, Tecla Sala and Enriqueta Sèculi i Bastida.
