The schedule for Corpus Christi 2021 has now been presented. It continues the commemoration of the 700th anniversary of the first time the festival was celebrated in the city, in 1320. This year it returns stronger than ever, with more than 15 dancing eggs and 17 flower carpets.

The Corpus Christi procession is one of the highlights of the festival. Over the years it has become the true major festival of the city. The Barcelona model of the procession, based on the great royal arrivals, has been exported around the country and represented the birth of the entremesos, and many of the elements of popular culture that we know today: the gegants [giants], the capgrossos [big-headed papier-mache carnival figures], the beasts, castellers, traditional dances….

This year the procession returns to the street after 2020 when it was held behind closed doors in the cloisters of La Catedral. In 2021 the procession will take place on Avinguda de La Catedral, as is tradition. The event will begin at 18.30 with the mass, which will be attended by all of the Seguici Popular: the Gegants de la Ciutat with the Capgrossos Macers, the Àliga [eagle], the Lleó [lion], the Mulassa [giant mule], the Bou [bull], the Drac [dragon], the She-dragon, the Serene Dragon, the Cavallets Cotoners, the Gegants del Pi, the Gegants de Santa Maria del Mar, the Falcons, and the Seguici Ball de bastons [stick dance]. The Gegants Nous [New Giants] from the Casa de la Caritat or Corpus will also be present.

When the mass is finished, at around 19.45, the procession will begin. First of all, before the parade begins the Gegants Nous from the Casa de la Caritat or Corpus and the Gegants de la Ciutat will dance in front of the Monstrance. Then the procession will begin, going around Avinguda de La Catedral, led by the Àliga, the Gegants de la Ciutat with the Capgrossos Macers and the Gegants del Corpus, all accompanied by their musicians. On returning to the starting point, the Àliga will dance in front of the Monstrance and the Virolai will be sung.

To get invitations to the mass and the procession (you cannot attend just one of the events on their own) go to the sacristy of La Catedral, from Monday to Friday, between 10.00 and 12.30, while stocks last.

Also, from 30 May to 6 June you can visit the Seguici Popular at the City Hall (entrance via Carrer de la Font de Sant Miquel) from 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm, without prior reservation. On Sunday 6 June you can only visit in the morning.
