Pastorets del Centre Catòlic de Gràcia
The Centre Catòlic de Gràcia was the venue for the 1903 premiere of L'estel de Natzaret (The Star of Nazareth). This lyrical drama, written in 1891 by Ramon Pàmies, with music by Msgr Miquel Ferrer, was created in the context of a movement to renew the Pastorets genre at the end of the 19th century. With a prelude and three acts, it talks about the battle between good and evil. A prominent place is given to the parable of the prodigal son, Naïm, who Satanàs and Sant Miquel put to the test to see if Man can change or not. Naïm is full of hate, remorse, greed and envy but he is reconciled with his father and confronts the devil to adore, finally, the Baby Jesus.
Since the year of the premiere, the Gràcia centre's amateur theatre group has performed the play every Christmas apart from during the civil war years, 1936-39, when its premises were in the hands of the anarchist youth organisation, Joventuts Llibertàries.
The Teatre del Cercle puts it on in the centre's hall. In fact it is one of the centre's sections, the others being song and dance, sport, billiards and xapó billiards. Founded in 1903 by former members of the Centre Moral i Instructiu de Gràcia, the Cercle Catòlic de Gràcia is a private, non-profit organisation, a social, cultural and sports association that offers its members free-time and educational services and activities. Many of these are open to the general public.
