Pastorets de Sant Pere Apòstol
The repertoire of the Grup Escènic Sant Pere Apòstol includes El bressol de Jesús o en Garrofa i en Pallanga (The Crib of Jesus or Garrofa and Pallanga) by Frederic Soler, aka Serafí Pitarra. They stage this version of the Pastorets (Shepherds) every year in the theatre at the Centre Sant Pere Apòstol, which they have belonged to ever since it was founded. The centre is in the Sant Pere neighbourhood, which is part of the Ciutat Vella district.
Pitarra's play stars Garrofa, a rich man but none too bright, who is the mayor of a small community of shepherds, and his friend Pallanga, who is poor but more cunning. Then there is Raquel, who is in love with Jessè but forced to marry Garrofa by her parents, Aram and Betzabè, plus Sant Miquel and Satanàs, who represent good and evil on earth. Satanàs, a very strong character in this version, does his best to get Raquel to convince Jessè to kill Garrofa so they can get married. But, thanks to Sant Miquel's intervention, the devil does not succeed. The story ends with the birth of Jesus and the adoration of the shepherds.
Between actors and technical staff, the Grup Escènic de Sant Pere Apòstol (GESPA), which is the amateur theatre section of the social and cultural centre founded in 1982, has over a hundred members. Today the Centre Sant Pere Apòstol is a meeting point that promotes and creates open activities to foster community coexistence in the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina and La Ribera neighbourhoods. It is home to a various groups and associations offering a wide range of activities that include sardanes, gegants, diables, tabalers, choral singing, children and adult theatre, concerts, talks, hiking and traditional dance. In 2010 it received the Barcelona Medal of Honour "for over a hundred years of educational, social and cultural action, and for its firm commitment to promoting the association movement".
