Escola de Puntaires de Barcelona
The Barcelona Lacemakers' School is dedicated to the study and teaching of the bobbin and needle techniques. It carries on the work begun in the 1930s by Antònia and Montserrat Raventós, two sisters who revived techniques that had been lost by searching through the City History Archives. There are two sides to the school: preserving the old techniques while continuing to innovate in this area through training.
A good example is the ‘Barcelona Lace’, a unique design created by the Raventós sisters that combines bobbin and needle lace. This style grew out of a commission for an altar cloth at Barcelona Cathedral during the Eucharistic Congress in 1952. The result was a very large work with lots of allegorical motifs referring to Barcelona's history, which did not resemble any other lace made up to that point.
Today the Escola de Puntaires de Barcelona, which is on Carrer de Sant Erasme, offers all kinds of special courses, workshops and activities linked to the traditional Catalan style. The lacemaking school is also actively involved in gatherings of lacemakers, especially those held in Barcelona for the Mercè Santa Eulàlia festivals.
