Cobla Sant Jordi
Since its founding in 1983, the Cobla Sant Jordi has devoted itself to the performance of concert music, typcally playing great works as well as new compositions. Even so, its repertoire also includes all the traditional cobla music.
The Cobla Sant Jordi is the permanent cobla band for the Auditori de Barcelona's season, and it regularly participates in the main appearances of sardana groups in the country. Its concerts have been heard throughout Catalonia and Northern Catalonia, and in international festivals, such as the Grec, Perelada, Vendrell, Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Rialp. Abroad, the cobla has played in Germany, the USA and France. In 1997, they were give the title Cobla Ciutat de Barcelona by Barcelona City Council. The cobla has also been the recipient of awards from the Premis Ciutat de Barcelona de Música in 2011, Altaveu in 2012 and Enderrock in 2013. Its work Amargós & Vidal: dues visions contemporànies de la cobla, 15 modern views of the cobla, was a finalist in the best jazz album category of the 2010 Premios de la Música.
The cobla has played under the baton of such famous names as Jordi León (the founder), Antoni Ros-Marbà, Jesús Ventura i Barnet, Edmon Colomer and Salvador Brotons, and has worked with oustanding musicians including Manel Camp and the flamenco guitar player Niño Josele. It has also given joint concerts with the Orfeó Català, the Cor del Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Coral Sant Jordi choirs as well as the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra.
Since it was set up, the Cobla Sant Jordi has recorded sixteen very diverse discs. These include the complete works for cobla by Eduard Toldrà, and monographs dedicated to the compositions for cobla by Joan and Ricard Lamote de Grignon, Manuel Oltra, Rafael Ferrer and Josep Serra. Other highlights are the recording conducted by Antoni Ros-Marbà which is devoted to classical concert music for cobles, the anthologies La Sardana and La Sardana, grans èxits, and three volumes of works by composers including Agustí Borgunyó, Joaquim Serra, Joan Lluís Moraleda and Xavier Boliart. Among the cobla's latest releases are the CD Pascal Comelade & Cobla Sant Jordi and another live disc with the singer Roger Mas.
