Castellers de Sants
Following a series of contacts and rehearsals over the course of 1992, the Castellers de Sants made their first public appearance in Plaça de Bonet i Muixí on 9 May 1993. Supported by the Barcelona and Cornellà colles, they mounted and dismounted a walking pillar of four, a four of six (six storeys of four people), a three of six and a five of five without a base.
Members of the Sants colla wear a grey shirt as a tribute to the workers at Espanya Industrial and other textile mills in Sants, Hostafrancs and La Bordeta in the 19th century. The colour of their shirts has also earned them the nickname borinots - bumblebees. They hold their annual diada castellera in October. During the season they rehearse at the Jaume I School, in the Sants neighbourhood, while their social centre is in a nearby centre known as Cal Borinot.
The Castellers de Sants celebrated their 20th anniversary on 11 March 2013 with a ceremony in the Saló de Cent at Barcelona City Hall and by building a special, symbolic castell called the castell de cara. This structure, supported by a crane, was raised in Plaça de Sant Miquel, inside the castellers monument created by the sculptor Antoni Llena, where the castellers imitated building a castell but de cara, i.e. facing the public.
In the summer of 2013, two hundred group members travelled to India to take part in the Dahi Handi festival in Thane, near Bombay. At this celebration of the birth of Krishna, Indians from the state of Maharashtra build human towers called govindas. The trip combined culture and solidarity, and the Castellers de Sants gave numerous performances, some before over 15,000 people.
The finest towers by the Borinots castellers are the two person nine tier tower with a folre [second level base tier] and manilles [third level handholding tier], or the single person eight tier tower with the same 2nd and 3rd tier features which is successfully mounted. Likewise, the three person nine tier tower with folre or the four person nine tier tower with the same base. In 2014 the Castellers de Sants team completed their best ever season when for the first time in their history, in the neighbourhood square where they started out, they assembled a tower which is considered something extremely special. The two person nine tier tower with folre and manilles. The best performance was at the XXXVI Diada dels Minyons de Terrassa meeting a month later, when they repeated the same tower and also assembled single person eight tier tower with the same base features, as well as a three person nine tier tower with folre.
