Grup Sardanista Xaloc
The Grup Sardanista Ciutat Comtal was set up in 1971. Four years later, Ciutat Comtal had so many members that they set up Xaloc. This started as a subsidiary group but, over the years, it developed and became the main group. They enjoyed a lot of success but stopped competing in 1999 and gave way to the Colla Mare Nostrum, another subsidiary group set up in 1976.
Eventually the "Mare", as they are called, became the main team. In 2003 they won the lluïment (traditional steps) category in the Catalan Championship and took part in all the punts lliures (choreographed) competitions of the championship. They have also taken part in the Individual "Sardanes Revesses" (Calculated Steps) Championship of Catalonia on a number of occasions and won lots of prizes. They have won the "Lluïment" Championship nine times, including four in a row, and been runners-up twenty times. They have also won 2 Catalan Cups.
The grup sardanista has yet another colla, the Enxaneta, which was set up as a nursery for dancers and later became the competition team in the Championship of Catalonia adult category. Later still they stopped competing in the Catalan championship and started representing Xaloc in the Barcelona Territorial Championship. The Colax colla, made up of former members of the group, also do performances sometimes.
Mare Nostrum, now the number one team, take part in the Catalan championships. But, besides all these competitive dances, the various colles of the Grup Sardanista Xaloc also put on public displays all round Catalonia and abroad, for example, in France, Germany and Italy. They even accompanied the President of Catalonia on a trip to the Netherlands.
And apart from all the strictly sardana-related activities, the group also organise recreational activities for their members, such as trips, an indoor football championship between sardanista teams and other weekend activities.
