Esbart Sant Jordi
The Esbart Sant Jordi, a section of the Foment Martinenc cultural association, has been popularising traditional Catalan dances since 1970.The Foment was set up in the Sant Martí de Provençals neighbourhood in 1877 as a cultural centre to promote education amongst workers. Its dance section was set up by a group of young people who had previously been members of the Esbart Català de Dansaires.
The Esbart Sant Jordi's dancers are organised into three groups by age, ranging from 4 to 30, and they have a great variety of costumes, made by the members themselves, for all kinds of shows.
Their dance repertoire includes traditional dances from Catalan-speaking lands and others of more recent creation.
In 1978, they helped to set up the Roda d'Esbarts Catalònia. This was a joint initiative involving three other esbarts: Joventut Nostra, which belongs to the Agrupació Congrés, Montseny del Poble Nou and the Montserratí Martinenc, a section of the Centre Moral del Clot. The idea was to hold meets for the dancers in the various youth and children's groups. In 2004 this was expanded to include the veterans' groups.
The Esbart Sant Jordi's dance corps has taken its dances all round the country, as well as to cities in other parts of Spain, like Bilbao and Valladolid, and Europe. For example, they have visited Amsterdam, Brussels, Castiglione del Lago, Florence, Lausanne, Luxembourg and Toulouse.
They have a collection of dolls dressed in exact replicas of the clothes worn by the dancers in their performances. Occasionally they hold exhibitions of these dolls, which have even appeared on stage at some very special events.
