‘Barcelona: senior-citizen-friendly city 2022-2030’ is a new plan for the city to promote the autonomy of elderly people with the services, facilities and support necessary to help them choose a lifestyle which best suits their values. The city is home to nearly 350,000 people over the age of 65, some 21.1% of the entire population.
The plan has an initial action plan with 26 initiatives to respond to the main challenges in making Barcelona a truly senior-citizen-friendly city. These challenges include unwanted loneliness, longevity, the digital transformation, care, intergenerational relationships and accessibility.
To respond to the challenges identified, the plan is structured into the following five areas:
- Empowerment, respect and good treatment
- Erradication of loneliness
- Intergenerational relationships
- Civic and social participation
- Spaces, facilities and services
The plan was presented to the Advisory Board for the Elderly to deliberate over it and engage in participatory debate. Based on the Barcelona Commitment to be senior-citizen-friendly, all parties involved pledge to develop the plan in their relevant spheres of action.
