Barcelona for Climate

The Climate Emergency Declaration urges us to change the way we get around, how we feed ourselves, how we consume, how we educate, etc. and to move from an economic model based on continual growth, which involves an ever-increasing consumption of natural resources and the multiplication of inequalities, to one that respects the planet’s ecological limits and guarantees a decent life for everyone. The Doughnut Economics model is a response to the necessary change to which this declaration commits us.

This year, for the second time, we are also renewing the Citizens Commitment to Sustainability, which is the road map through which the B+S network organisations and the City Council make a commitment to undertake sustainability initiatives which, on this occasion, will be based on and inspired by the principles of Doughnut Economics. We also aim to make full use of this time of change to rethink the way the B+S network works, in order to generate a greater impact.

For all of these reasons, Barcelona is now working towards Doughnut Economics. In order to do this, it has the support of the Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL), the organisation jointly founded by Kate Raworth to help cities put the theory of Doughnut Economics into practice.
