Poblenou superblock

Area contained by four streets: Badajoz, Pallars, Llacuna and Tànger.

The Poblenou superblock was created in September 2016. It represents the basic model in which the scope is exactly nine blocks of the Eixample (3×3), and the main streets are located, as in the theoretical model, around its edge. All the streets contained in it are for neighbourhood use and are traffic-calmed with the aim of achieving a network of streets where citizens have priority in mobility, the use of public space includes more activities than just passing through (seating and play areas, community activities, sports, etc.), motorized traffic is limited, and safe, green, shared space is encouraged.

Initially, basic mobility measures were applied in the form of temporary, reversible, immediate interventions that served to make the new uses visible. A process of evaluation and proposals involving local residents was later promoted to work together on the necessary adjustments to improve its functioning and realize its potential. As a result of complaints and ideas, and the work done in the framework of the Work Committee, the definitive mobility plan was implemented in early 2017.

In a first phase, interventions were carried out using ground paint, street furniture and trees in containers to create and highlight seating areas, particularly for children and for neighbourhood interaction, in sections of the streets and intersections freed from traffic. Picnic tables were also set up, a literary itinerary created and space reserved for occasional markets. Gradually, as a result of the process of information and debate with local people and associations, play and sports areas were also created.

Autumn 2017 saw a new phase of work, with interventions to structure the layout of the c/Almogàvers section between c/Roc Boronat and c/Llacuna, as well as pavements forming triangular plazas at the approaches to the perimeter traffic streets. Work was also carried out to consolidate seating areas and green space.

The various interventions gained 25,129 m2 of public space and increased playground areas (2,483 m2). They were also a driving force for various public housing initiatives, leading to an increase in green space at the centre of street blocks (from 9,722 m2 in 2016 to 18,632 m2 in 2018).
