Opening Up the Streets. Gràcia

Opening Up the Streets turns some of the city’s streets into places for people. It is an initiative to create a city that is free of smoke, motorbikes, cars and noise, a way of fighting climate crisis by stopping traffic on the city’s main streets to turn them into healthy open spaces. Every weekend, the axis formed by Creu Coberta, c/Sants and c/Gran de Gràcia becomes a traffic-free space that is full of life.

To ensure people’s safety, traffic is restricted during Opening Up the Streets. The only vehicles allowed access are those of municipal and emergency services, vehicles needing to load or unload, local residents going to private parking spaces, users of rotating carparks, taxis in the event of an emergency and those of people with reduced mobility. Bicycles, however, are allowed. In this way, 58,600 m2 are gained for neighbourhood use, where it is safe for children to run and play, and for people to walk and chat, and community activities are held.
