La Model

The definitive closure of the old Model prison is an excellent opportunity to recover a central space in the city and gain a large green area in a very deficient context, as well as various neighbourhood facilities and social housing, highlighting architectural heritage and the memory of a very significant space in the history of the city and the country in the last 100 years.

The planned project aims to equip the space with facilities, social housing and a new urban park, while preserving heritage and taking environmental aspects into account.

Since the City Council became the owner of the Model prison, opening up the site as a municipal facility has been a priority.

The first phase was to provide the buildings with the basic logistics of services and facilities. The activities have been given juridic status and a series of actions has been specified, such as giving tangible form to their function as facilities around the Entença courtyard, with an office space, services, an events hall, exhibition space and a logistics warehouse; the outdoor spaces have been repaved and the courtyard on Entença has been made accessible as a street block interior; gallery four has been fitted out to host public events, and a museum itinerary has been laid out; activities (cultural and neighbourhood, film shoots, etc.) have been hosted with the corresponding self-protection plans and processing of licenses; freestanding constructions have been demolished to make way for the provisional Xirinacs and Entença schools; two provisional schools have been set up separately from the original site, with playgrounds and gymnasiums; the school environment has been improved by two interventions in the Protect Our Schools programme; palliative interventions have been carried out on the façades and roofs of the Entença building and half of the panopticon and the galleries, pending their definitive transformation, and, finally, an artistic installation has been put up in the courtyard between the fourth and fifth galleries, with the removal of the walls adjacent to the city on c/Rosselló.

In a second phase, the Model prison will be turned into a hub of amenities and a large green space, with seven public facilities and spaces at the service of the district and the city: the Memorial, a secondary school, a pre-school centre, an assisted living facility, a sports centre, a youth club, and spaces of social and solidarity economy.
