Quatre Camins housing complex for the elderly

This new residential building is located in a singular spot near Collserola, where the small scale of the neighbouring domestic buildings combines with larger teaching and care facilities. The project seeks a scale of implementation in keeping with the setting, complementing the domesticity of the single-family residential fabric with the dimension and scale of other elements around it.

The aim is to create an L-shaped building aligned with the streets and turned towards good orientations and views, with most of the houses facing south or south-east.

The building is compact on the street side, with a north façade that houses passages leading to the homes, thereby generating an energy filter. On the other side it breaks up and steps down towards the centre of the plot, making for more domestic contact with the adjacent yards. The main entrance is situated at an intermediate level that brings the building closer to the street, c/Quatre Camins.

Adaptation to the topography serves to create two large community spaces, where the elderly residents can carry out activities in the open air. One, on the first floor, is a terrace in direct relation with the garden space. The other, on the third floor, connects with the laundry and the roof.

All the homes have a comfortable space that connects them with the outside, an inner space that offers protection from the wind and greater privacy. The brick lattices and adjustable blinds also serve to modulate the temperature and are passive energy-saving measures that increase user comfort. Overall, this is a compact construction with a minimal ecological footprint and low energy demand, with good thermal insulation. The use of solar radiation and mechanical heat recovery ventilation according to PassivHaus standards reduces total consumption by 75% and has an energy rating of A.
