La Balma cooperative housing

This building for Sostre Cívic cooperative was constructed jointly with La Boqueria cooperative on a municipal plot on a leasehold set aside for this purpose.

The building contains 20 apartments, one of which will be used as a stepping stone for families in the process of social reintegration. The design of the homes is based on an open-plan grid of 16 m2 units that match the laminated wood structure. These units make for very varied divisions and distributions, and allow users to make decisions about their spaces. Each apartment begins with a fully equipped base of 50 m2, which is the small type (S). When extended with another one or two units, this basic apartment becomes an M or an L. The units used to enable these extensions are spaces managed by the cooperative.

The initial participatory process produced a programme of community spaces that are distributed throughout all the floors of the building, varying in character according to the use of each space. The aim is for the community spaces and circulations to promote human relations, spontaneous meetings and cooperative activities throughout the building. Situated on the ground floor are the communal kitchen-diner, a space for bicycles and a workshop open to the neighbourhood, the lobby and two commercial premises on c/Espronceda, run by the cooperative. The programme of small-format units is laid out on the other floors, promoting internal circulations (multipurpose room, reading area, guest rooms, care area and laundry). The fully accessible roof, finally, is designed as the cooperative’s outdoor space: a terrace of over 300 m2 where residents can create vegetable gardens and a shaded recreational space. Circulations always interconnect community spaces. Often minimized, here they are open, ventilated, sunny spaces designed to be pleasant for users, since they are places for socializing and resting.
