The Protect Our Schools project, launched in 2020, is the transformation of the school environment, implementing various interventions to prioritize children’s safety and well-being: traffic-calming in the areas around schools by reducing traffic lanes and speeds; improved physical access to schools; more seating and green areas, and street furniture such as benches and planters; the creation of spaces for spontaneous play, and the installation of safety elements.

Protect Our Schools is part of a crosscutting programme of Barcelona City Council that aims to improve the environmental quality and the comfort of public spaces and road safety in school areas, increase the visibility of school environments and involve educational and neighbourhood communities in the creation and use of new spaces. In this way, the city can advance towards a new urban model in which schools are focal points and public space is given particular attention.
