APROP Glòries

Using industrialized methods to convert recycled shipping containers, this building —42 homes arranged on seven floors in a total of 77 prefabricated modules— forms part of the city council’s commitment to innovate in order to provide emergency accommodation. Following the successful example of similar projects in cities such as London, Copenhagen and Vancouver, it is a fast, sustainable, quality way to build accommodation that aims to prevent people being expelled from neighbourhoods.

APROP is a programme of temporary accommodation facilities, organized by social services, with stays of a maximum of two years. The transportable units are positioned on empty sites awaiting occupation by homes or facilities in areas where local people affected by residential exclusion go about their daily lives. The temporary use of these sites allows housing applicants to continue to live close to their places of origin.

The industrialized construction system allows much of the process to be carried out in the workshop, significantly reducing the time and the environmental impact of construction. The shipping containers are turned into housing units of 30 and 60 m², with one or two bedrooms. Both sizes have natural lighting and ventilation, and private and common outdoor spaces (balconies and walkways), are fitted with functional and versatile furniture, and ensure thermal, acoustic and light comfort thanks to the use of high-quality, efficient systems of installation, insulation and spatial performance.
