APROP Ciutat Vella

The social services use provisional proximity accommodation (APROP) to provide a temporary place to live and social and educational care for people and families at risk of social exclusion while they do not have somewhere stable to live.

With the aim of improving and innovating in the care of the families attended, enabling them to become increasingly stable and autonomous, the emphasis is on support in work and training, and on financial savings during their stay in the accommodation. The idea is to enable them to move out with a greater guarantee of autonomy and self-sufficiency, and to accompany them in finding and transitioning to a stable residential alternative. Individuals and families receive relational, educational, and social and professional support, helping to bring about a positive transformation and improvement of family relations.

The APROP programme started in January 2020 with a pilot project in c/Nou de Sant Francesc, in the district of Ciutat Vella, just 140 m from the Rambla. Promoted by the Municipal Social Services Institute (IMSS), this first building, completed in 16 weeks, has 12 apartments arranged on four floors. The ground floor of APROP Ciutat Vella houses an extension of the nearby CAP Gòtic primary care centre. The overall building stands out for its envelope, a double-skin façade that adapts to the street layout as well as providing passive thermal management.

This building has features comparable to those of a conventional building, like its lifts, and has been awarded an AA energy certification for its incorporation of sustainable systems like the use of the roof to produce electrical energy with photovoltaic panels and collect rainwater.

The process used to construct the first APROP, in the Gothic Quarter, reduced the total use of non-renewable primary energy and CO2 emissions by 33%, and represented a 48% saving in the use of resources.
