‘Possible tales’ by Jeff Wall
Photographic pictures. The work of the Canadian artist has contributed in a very important way to define or redefine photography as an integral part of contemporary art.
Jeff Wall's practice of the ‘photographic picture’ inherits from the history of painting its key principle: composition.
The 36 works of art presented are drawn from a corpus of around 200 photographic pictures taken since 1978. Formed piece by piece, the ensemble is both dense and extremely varied, crossed by recurrences and intersecting themes, with an acute sense of enigma. Every image is part of a wide range of registers and modes of expression, from pure description to beginnings of possible tales.
The earliest work in the exhibition, a landscape from 1980, depicts a semi-rural site in the Greater Vancouver area; it corresponds to a documentary orientation. The most recent work (2023), through allegory, belongs to the other mode developed by Wall, which he describes as “cinematographic”: those images are carefully staged, sometimes to the point of producing a hallucinatory or marvellous world. A number of pictures partake of an intermediate, “near documentary” register.

Des dels anys 80, el treball de l’artista canadenc Jeff Wall (1946) ha contribuït de manera molt important a definir o redefinir la fotografia com una part integrant de l’art contemporani. La seva pràctica del «quadre fotogràfic» hereta de la història de la pintura el seu tret més fonamental: la composició. Les 36 obres presentades s’extreuen d’un corpus de prop de 200 quadres fotogràfics realitzats des del 1978. Aquest conjunt, creat peça a peça, és dens i alhora extremadament divers, travessat de recursos i encreuaments temàtics, on predomina un fort sentit de l’enigma. Cada imatge se situa en un ventall molt ampli de registres i formes d’expressió, entre la pura descripció i l’inici d’un possible conte. L’obra més antiga de l’exposició, un paisatge de 1980, representa un escenari semi-rural als afores de Vancouver; correspon a una orientació documental. L’obra més recent (2023) mostra, a través de l’al·legoria, l’altre mètode desenvolupat per Wall, que ell mateix descriu com a «cinematogràfic»: la imatge s’escenifica curosament, sovint fins al punt de produir un món al·lucinatori o meravellós. Altres quadres pertanyen a un registre intermedi, «gairebé documental».
