Barcelona literary tour: beyond Orwell and Hemingway
Throughout history, Barcelona has attracted many writers from around the world, as well as having its share of home-grown talent. The Spanish Civil War was a flashpoint that drew many writers here to witness or partake in the fighting.
We invite you to join us on a walking tour to discover the Barcelona that writers such as George Orwell, Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway visited. It will take place in April, capitalising on the fact that 23 April is both Sant Jordi’s Day in Catalonia and World Book Day.
The route will also include the experiences of lesser-known writers such as Muriel Rukeyser and the Barcelona of locals such as Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán and Mercè Rodoreda. We will stop in some of the writers’ favourite squares in the Gothic Quarter, as well as experiencing the chaos of La Rambla during the Civil War and reliving the tragedies that came with it.
