The Pavelló Blau is born, the benchmark outdoor macro-space for sports activities on the waterfront
The Pavelló Blau is a project that has been many years in the making, and that is part of the City Council’s action plan for the current term of office. Essentially the initiative is aimed at developing Barcelona’s waterfront, and creating a large sports area focused on providing facilities for the practice of beach and water sports, as well as an urban space that offers promenades, parks and other areas dedicated to sport – the Pavelló Blau is a concept that encompasses all of this.
In fact the waterfront has become one of the most attractive places in the city for the wide range of leisure, dining and sporting options it offers. It all started with sailing, but local residents soon made these spaces their own, using them for other activities, such as walking, running and cycling. Later, other, new activities were added, with the increase in popularity of beach sports: beach volleyball, beach tennis, surfing, underwater sports, paddle boarding, and more.
For all these reasons and many more, Barcelona City Council is supporting the Pavelló Blau, which we identify as the whole of the waterfront and port areas from Port Vell to Port Fòrum, including the new Bocana del Port and the Olympic Port, as well as the Plataforma Marina and all of Barcelona’s beaches. The concept of the Pavelló Blau encompasses 17 educational centres, and 46 different spaces, marine areas and sports facilities. Furthermore, over 40 different regulated sporting activities of all kinds are being developed there, and it is expected to be the venue for dozens of important sporting events and activities in the city.
Action plan 2022-2030
The Pavelló Blau is the umbrella project aimed at structuring and encouraging physical exercise on the waterfront, which extends for 5 kilometres. The project identifies 7 steering projects, 4 priority areas (the spaces where the transformation will begin) and a total of 232 specific actions. This is an action plan that will be developed between 2022-2030, and will involve an expected initial investment of €26.7 million.
