In 2023, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) has reached a historic record in public fundraising, reaching 69.9 million euros, which represents an increase of 40% compared to the previous year.

This injection of resources has been key in giving impetus to biomedical and technological research in areas such as genomics, bioengineering and the development of new medical treatments, positioning the PCB as one of the most powerful public health innovation spaces in Europe.

The economic growth obtained has allowed the PCB to strengthen its model of open innovation, based on collaboration between institutions and companies at an international level. By 2023, the park’s institutes and centers have participated in more than 1,700 collaborative projects, both nationally and globally, in a determined commitment to connect science with the real needs of society. The collaboration strategy boosts the attraction of talent and consolidates the PCB as a point of reference for researchers from all over the world.

Open innovation has been materialized in concrete advances of great social impact. In the field of medical diagnosis, one of the most outstanding technologies has been the MAF-TEST device, a tool designed for the detection of breast cancer that is already available to health professionals, benefiting thousands of patients. Other projects include the creation of Nanobots Therapeutics, a spin-off that develops nanorobots capable of targeting drugs directly to tumor cells, thus offering new treatment methods that are more precise and have fewer side effects.

The PCB has also strengthened its technological infrastructure, incorporating cutting-edge equipment such as the 1.0 GHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, which is unique in Europe and allows a more detailed study of biomolecules for research into advanced therapies.

With all this, the PCB has made great progress in technology transfer. By 2023, the park centers have filed 24 new patents and licensed several technologies, an important step to ensure that scientific advances have practical application and reach the public. The success of these initiatives reflects the PCB’s ability to establish bridges between academic research and market needs, contributing to create a direct impact on people’s quality of life.
