Second stage of the School Climate Plan: 30 more schools to get more comfortable temperatures
The second stage of the Barcelona School Climate Plan gets under way, with climate control systems for 30 schools and an investment of 17.7 million euros. Funded by the tourist tax, the work will be carried out in 2025 and during the holidays, to minimise the impact on teaching activity. The first stage benefitted 24 schools and will be completed this October. In all, 9,401 students will be able to enjoy fully climate-controlled schools in the 2025-2026 academic year, with machinery to cool classrooms and communal areas during the hot months, and to warm them efficiently and sustainably in winter. This figure comes in addition to the 8,373 students who benefitted from the first stage, making a total of 17,774 students with sustainable climate control systems in their classrooms.
The projects include the installation of aerothermal systems, air renewal machines and photovoltaic panels to provide the energy needed. In this second stage, priority is being given to schools with greater climate control needs, including schools in all the city’s districts. The thirty schools are:
- Ciutat Vella: Escola Parc de la Ciutadella.
- Eixample: Escoles Auró, Joan Miró, Diutació, Ramón Llull, de la Concepció and Carlit.
- Sants-Montjuïc: Escoles Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer, Pràctiques and Jaume I.
- Les Corts: Escola Pau Romeva.
- Sarrià-Sant Gervasi: Escola Poeta Foix.
- Gràcia: Escola Sagrada Família, La Sedeta and Rius i Taulet.
- Horta-Guinardó: Institut Escola Coves d’en Cimany, Escoles Mas Casanovas, Els Pins and Torrent de Can Carabassa.
- Nou Barris: Escoles Timbaler del Bruc and Palma de Mallorca.
- Sant Andreu: Escoles Estel and Mestre Enric Gibert i Camins.
- Sant Martí: Escoles Dovella, l’Arenal de Llevant, Concepción Arenal, Miralletes, Rambleta del Clot, Prim and Les Acàcies.
Goal: Climate control for all publicly operated schools in the city
The Barcelona School Climate Plan, through the Barcelona Education Consortium, should install climate control systems in Barcelona between now and 2029, with a budget of 100 million euros from the tourist tax. The goal is to improve indoor air quality and provide comfortable temperatures throughout the year, guaranteeing comfortable and suitable spaces for 55,000 students. In addition, 30,000 square metres of photovoltaic panels should be installed to progressively decarbonise these spaces.
