The following characteristics apply in the call for the City Police:

  • Reserve of 40% of places for women.
  • Foreign language tests are not for eliminating candidates, but for them to improve their marks. As many as seven languages are recognised: German, English, Arabic, French, Italian, Urdu and Chinese.

The recruitment process for Barcelona City Police is made up of seven tests: a cultural and theory test, aptitude tests, a foreign language test, Catalan, character and skills tests and medical tests.

The main change in this year’s call for the Barcelona Fire Service is that candidates will be required to hold a baccalaureate qualification or equivalent to join the corps.

The rest of the characteristics of the call remain unchanged:

  • Reserve of 25% of places for women.
  • Foreign language tests are not for eliminating candidates, but for them to improve their marks. As many as seven languages are recognised: German, English, Arabic, French, Italian, Urdu and Chinese.

The recruitment process for the Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue Service (SPEIS) is one of the longest for all public-sector jobs, with the competitive entrance process consisting of nine tests in all: general knowledge, specific knowledge, Catalan, Spanish, physical aptitude, a practical test, a driving test, character and skills tests and medical tests.

Publication of rules for applications

The terms and conditions, now published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC), set out the requisites that candidates must satisfy to join the City Police, as well as the Barcelona Fire Service . As from the day after their publication, candidates have twenty natural days to submit their applications.

Full information and notifications on the stages of the call are available via Barcelona City Council’s e-headquarters (“Recruitment processes” section). Applications can be submitted online using the municipal procedures website.

The first test in the selection process will be held in the last quarter of the year. The goal of the City Council is for the process to be completed a year later at the end of 2026 so that successful candidates can start the corresponding training at the Institute of Public Security of Catalonia.

Information talks

Two members of the corps and a representative from the municipal Area for Human Resources will be offering information talks at the main premises of Barcelona Activa (C/ Llacuna, 156-162), on Thursday, 27 March. The sessions will explain the work of the City Police, Barcelona’s firefighters and the recruitment process, resolving any doubts or queries that might come up.

  • The talk by the City Police will be at 4 pm. Anybody wishing to attend this face-to-face session can do so by reserving a place here.
  • The talk by the firefighting corps will be at 5 pm. Anybody wishing to attend this face-to-face session can do so by reserving a place here.

The process will consolidate a workforce of 3,500 City Police officers and nearly 800 firefighters, the highest number ever thanks to the increases in staff achieved in recent years. Thanks to the latest calls, a further 128 police officers and 60 firefighters are set to join the corps in June.
